WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Mike Michaud announced that the U.S. Department of Justice awarded the Maine Department of Corrections a grant of $49,847 for their 2008 State Justice Statistics Program. This grant will assist the Maine Statistical Analysis Center with analyzing crime and corrections data to assist the Maine Legislature and other agencies with the development a long-term plan to deal with escalating costs, identifying efficiencies in practices, and developing recommendations for improvement of the prison systems.

"I am pleased that the Department of Justice has released this funding," said Michaud.  "This grant will help the State of Maine determine the most efficient way to operate our state prison system."

The State Justice Statistics Program is administered by the Department of Justice and is designed to maintain and enhance each State's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The program provides support to each state to coordinate and conduct research to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes relating to that States' penitentiary system.
