Multi-Scale Modeling Initiative

During the inaugural BISTIC (Biomedical Information Science and Technology Consortium) Symposium in November 2003 one of the concurrent sessions was dedicated to IMAG’s (Interagency Modeling and Analysis Group) interests in multiscale modeling. Subsequently, IMAG focused on the development of the Interagency Opportunities in Multi-Scale Modeling in Biomedical, Biological, and Behavioral Systems Solicitation. IMAG recognized that the modeling community is on the forefront of thinking across the biological continuum, rather than just focusing at one scale or level of resolution. In addition IMAG identified a strong desire among modelers to form multi-disciplinary partnerships across varied research communities.

Overall Intent of Solicitation

  • To develop new methodologies that span across biological scales
  • To develop multiscale methodologies applicable to biomedical, biological and behavioral research
  • To develop methodologies within the local multidisciplinary team and within the larger Framework environment
  • To further promote multiscale modeling through model sharing

This Solicitation was published August 10, 2004. Eight institutes of the NIH participated as well as three directorates of the NSF, two offices in the DOE and NASA. A multi-agency review was conducted January 2005 at NSF with review administrators from each of the four participating agencies. This solicitation resulted in the submission of 372  Letters of Intent and the review of 207 proposals.

Awards were made to 24 proposals across all four participating agencies. IMAG held the first annual Multiscale Modeling (MSM) Post-Award PI Consortium meeting on February 6, 2006 and the second annual Meeting on April 10-12, 2007.  These meetings served to bring together the grantees to discuss the formation and development of a model sharing platform for multiscale modeling, and discuss methods to link across multiple scales. IMAG is currently working with the ten Working Groups formed from the MSM Consortium meetings, around scientific and computational themes.

IMAG has created its own wiki in order to facilitate discussion and collaboration among the MSM Consortium: http://www.imagwiki.org/mediawiki.
