(A comparison of 2006 and 2007 data)

Violent crime declined 3.5 percent in the smallest metropolitan counties, those with fewer than 25,000 inhabitants.
Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter increased 7.4 percent in metropolitan counties with 25,000 to 99,999 inhabitants.
Robbery decreased 10.4 percent and forcible rape declined 8.7 percent in the smallest metropolitan counties, those with fewer than 25,000 inhabitants.
Property crime decreased in metropolitan counties with fewer than 100,000 residents and increased less than one-tenth of 1 percent in metropolitan counties with 100,000 or more inhabitants.
Violent crime increased in all population groupings in nonmetropolitan counties. The largest increase (4.4 percent) occurred in nonmetropolitan counties with 25,000 or more inhabitants.
Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter decreased 15.6 percent in the smallest nonmetropolitan counties, those with less than 10,000 inhabitants.
Property crimes increased 1.4 percent in nonmetropolitan counties with 25,000 and more residents and declined 2.5 percent in nonmetropolitan counties with fewer than 10,000 residents.
