Orange County - San Clemente

Many residents of San Clemente often think of their town as a paradise. With its pristine beaches and small-town atmosphere it is no wonder why. More than half a century ago much of the coastline between Los Angeles and San Diego remained untouched. As Southern California grew many of the beaches along the coast got caught up in the urban sprawl. San Clemente’s geographical isolation helped protect the city’s small-town charm.

Despite the city’s avoiding the mass urbanization of much of Southern California, the development of San Clemente did have a design. More than seventy-five years ago town founder, Ole Hanson created a layout for San Clemente, strictly planning the design and style of the city in Spanish Colonial architecture. The layout included restaurants, a clubhouse, residences, public parks, a public pool, a fishing pier and equestrian trails. Even today city ordinances are in place to ensure that historical homes and new development keep in the same beautiful design that makes San Clemente so appealing.

San Clemente’s appreciation in its past can be seen in one of its most recent projects: the restoration at Casa Romantica. Casa Romantica was Ole Hanson’s bluff top home at the time of the city’s founding. After being completed in 1928 Hanson lost the home to the bank in the Great Depression. With the home passing through many different owners it succumbed to the wear and tear of time and neglect. Saved by a team of local activists, Casa Romantica is now being renovated into a cultural center and garden. Many residents of San Clemente have come together to support this future site of performing and visual arts, educational programs and world-class gardens.

As Southern California changes and grows, San Clemente continues to hold on to its heritage as a small-town community, rich in history and beauty.
