Whitfield Announces $172,452 for Airport at Kentucky Dam State Park Mar 3, 2006 Congressman Ed Whitfield announced Wednesday that the Kentucky Dam State Park Airport will receive a $172,452 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

These funds are important for Gilbertsville and the communities in the surrounding area, said Whitfield. I am very pleased with this award, which will improve airport operations at the Park and benefit the economy.

The grant provides funding for construction of a new above-ground fuel farm system at the airport. Fuel tanks at the airport are currently located underground, which will be removed to avoid potential environmental concerns. The new above-ground fuel tanks will have a larger capacity, allowing the airport to serve more customers, including local businesses, transient flights, and State Park guests.

The construction of a new fuel tank system is in addition to an ongoing project to extend a runway at the airport and to remove obstructions that pose safety risks to inbound aircraft. Both the fuel tank construction and runway improvement project are scheduled to begin by the end of this year.

The grant is administered through the FAAs Airport Improvement Program (AIP). The AIP provides federal assistance for the planning and development of public use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). The NPIAS designates more than 3,300 airports that are significant to national air transportation and which are eligible for federal assistance.
