In recent years, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources have steadily gained popularity in Nevada.  Nevada currently ranks second in the Nation in the development and use of its geothermal resources and has considerable hydroelectric capacity.   Since 1978, the Department of Energy has been conducting research and developing the Yucca Mountain area in Nevada to serve as a long-term repository for spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste.
