Washington, DC - Today, Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) extended the deadline to file a Proof of Loss requirement (POL) for an additional 120 days for those impacted by the Midwest floods and tornadoes. FEMA announced the extension the week after Braley led a letter from 20 Members of Congress urging FEMA to waive the POL requirement. "While I will continue pushing FEMA to grant a full waiver, this is an important first step to ensure that all insured Iowans receive the help they need to rebuild," Braley said. "I will continue working to decrease redundant paperwork and unnecessary red tape so that Iowans receive disaster relief quickly and without delay." The National Flood Insurance Program, as well as some private flood insurance companies, requires individuals to file a Proof of Loss before they can receive any insurance payments. Iowans now have 240 days from the date of flooding to complete this process. On September 5th, Braley led a 20-member letter urging FEMA to waive the current POL requirement. |
