On a daily basis, we are all reminded of the increasing strains placed on the hard working citizens of the First Congressional District of Mississippi.  Whether it is rising energy costs, decreasing home prices, or mounting grocery bills, the majority of Americans are continually being held accountable for an economy that is not functioning at full capacity.

Since I came to Congress, I have been honored to serve as an active Member of the House Financial Services Committee, which has primary jurisdiction over the nation's financial and real estate markets.  Recently, I was proud to be a supporter of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 (H.R. 3221).  This legislation is only the first step in attempting to reassure the international marketplace that the American economy is still the strongest and most adaptable market structure in the world.  At this moment in time, it is essential for the federal government to play a reinforcement role for families and individuals who were willing to become homeowners over the past several years.

Throughout history, the American economy has recovered from various downturns.  I have complete faith this time will be no different, and I am committed to doing my part as a Member of Congress to ensure the next generation of Americans is on an equal playing field with an economy that is routinely adapting.
