The Library of Congress was established as a legislative library in 1800, but grew into a national library in the 19th century and today has one of the largest collections in the world, preserving a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations.

The Library of Congress occupies three buildings on Capitol Hill – the Thomas Jefferson Building, the John Adams Building, and the James Madison Memorial Building.  It houses approximately 128 million items on 530 miles of shelves and serves as a resource for thousands of Americans every day.  About two million researchers, scholars, and tourists visit the Library of Congress each year.

The highlight of a visit to the Library of Congress is the magnificent Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building, which rises 75 feet from the marble floor to the stained glass ceiling.  Marble columns, staircases, mosaics and paintings make this one of the most beautify public buildings in America.  In addition, visitors can wander through the many exhibitions the Library has on display as well as see historic items on display, such as the Gutenberg Bible.
