HOLT HOSTS “D.C. DAY” FOR
NEW JERSEY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS

Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ) today hosted Central New Jersey law enforcement officers for a day-long discussion about security issues facing New Jersey communities.  The event comes as Congress debates funding levels for federal law enforcement programs within the U.S. Department of Justice.

“I’m delighted to welcome to Washington, D.C. the men and women who keep our community safe and secure,” said Holt.  “It is important for them to be up-to-date on federal issues that affect them, and for me to listen and learn how I can help them in their service.”

Attending the day-long event were 30 law enforcement officers of varying ranks and responsibilities, including Chiefs of Police, detectives, patrol officers, and many others.  The officers represented police departments from across Central New Jersey, including municipalities in Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset, and Monmouth Counties.

Attendees heard presentations from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Acting Chief of the U.S. Capitol Police, a Member of Congress with law enforcement experience, and others.  Among the topics discussed were grant opportunities for local law enforcement agencies, gang interdiction, federal funding for law enforcement programs like Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), and emerging technologies that will help to protect communities.  The law enforcement officers updated Rep. Holt on issues that they frequently confront in securing New Jersey municipalities.

Holt thanked the officers for their service to the community and pledged to continue advocating for federal policies that will help police departments.

“Law enforcement officers in New Jersey face a range of challenges, including violent gang activity, the use and distribution of illegal drugs, and preventing and responding to community emergencies,” said Holt.  “I will do everything in my power to provide the support and resources that local law enforcement officers need to continue prevent and respond to emergencies.”
