HOLT CALLS ON PRESIDENT BUSH TO FORMALLY RENOUNCE
THE FIRST USE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS

Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today issued the following statement on the growing controversy over Iran’s nuclear program:

“Yesterday, the President said that with regard to Iran’s efforts to acquire nuclear weapons, his doctrine of prevention does not necessarily involve the use of force, and that the talk of a possible U.S. military campaign employing ‘bunker-busting’ or other tactical nuclear weapons was ‘wild speculation.’ Unfortunately, neither he, Secretary Rumsfeld, nor Joint Chiefs Chairman Peter Pace have categorically stated that the United States will refrain from the first use of nuclear weapons. The President can reassure the world that America remains a responsible world power. He can state unambiguously that the United States will not use nuclear weapons in a first strike against Iran or any other sovereign nation.”
