Elimination of Weapons-Grade Plutonium Production

NNSA’s Elimination of Weapons-Grade Plutonium Production (EWGPP) program will enable the Russian Federation to permanently cease production of weapons-grade plutonium. The program will enable the Russians to cease operation of three remaining weapons-grade plutonium production reactors, located in the Siberian cities of Seversk and Zheleznogorsk. NNSA is working with the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom) to shutdown the three remaining weapons-grade plutonium production reactors through the construction of new replacement heat and electrical production capacity. The reactor shutdowns mark a major U.S. nonproliferation milestone objective.

Two of the reactors have already been permanently shut down and the third, at Zheleznogorsk, will be shut down with the completion of the Zheleznogorsk project.
