Information Security

Information security deals with requirements for the protection and control of information and matter required to be classified or controlled by statutes, regulations, or NNSA and Department of Energy (DOE) directives.

Classified Matter Protection and Control ensures the protection and control of classified matter.  It includes briefing and training requirements for personnel who work with classified on identifying, marking, reproducing, protecting, handling, transmitting, storing, and destroying such material, as well as incident reporting and emergency procedures.  It also assures that personnel who do not work with classified are nevertheless trained to recognize unprotected classified matter by cover sheets and markings and know the proper actions to take.

Operations Security disrupts or defeats the ability of foreign or other adversaries to exploit sensitive information or activities and to prevent inadvertent disclosure of such information.  It includes awareness training, evaluation of data, and the review of information prior to public release or posting to publicly available web sites to assure it does not contain data that would assist an adversary.

Technical Surveillance Countermeasures are taken by qualified personnel to detect and neutralize technologies that are intended to obtain unauthorized access to classified or unclassified controlled information.

Security of Foreign Government Information is either (1) Provided to the U.S. government by foreign governments or international organizations of governments with the expectation that the information, its source, or both will be held in confidence, or (2) Produced by the U.S. government pursuant to or as a result of a joint arrangement with foreign governments or organizations of governments requiring that the information, the arrangement, or both to be held in confidence, or (3) Received and treated as Foreign Government Information under the terms of  Executive Order 12958, classified national security information, or a predecessor order.

Sensitive Compartmented Information is classified information concerning or derived from intelligence sources, methods, or analytical processes which is required to be protected in accordance with policy established by the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Special Access Program is for a specific class of information that imposes protection and access requirements which exceed those normally required for information at the same classification level.

Unclassified Controlled Information is unclassified information which may be exempt from public release under the Freedom of Information Act.  It requires handling and access on a need-to-know basis until or unless reviewed and determined releasable.
