Construction Projects

Nuclear Materials Safeguards and Security Upgrade Project Phase II at Los Alamos National Laboratory
The Nuclear Materials Safeguards and Security Upgrade Project - Phase II is nearing completion of engineering design.  in 2007, there was a change in acquisition strategy for the project from design-build to the more traditional design-bid-build.  As a result, the project’s design team was tasked to finish the design, as opposed to a design-build firm completing design.  When complete, this project will offer significantly improved security features that will enable Los Alamos National Laboratory's Technical Area 55 to meet the current Design Basis Threat. It will result in new physical barriers around the facility, the replacement of aging sensor and camera systems, and the modernization of the personnel and vehicle access control stations.

Security Perimeter Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory
The Security Perimeter Project was completed in 2007 and established an integrated site access control system with a security perimeter around the core area of the laboratory.  The project created a significantly better stand-off protection, allowed immediate implementation of higher security condition levels, and improved entry control effectiveness.

Security Improvement Project at Y-12 National Security Complex
The Security Improvement Project will provide the Y-12 National Security Complex with the Argus security control system and raise the existing alarm system backbone control equipment up to modern standards.  The project supports implementation of a comprehensive framework for managing and integrating personnel security and access control systems across NNSA and will address longstanding problems with duplicative and redundant development and maintenance of site-level security information systems.  In addition, this project will upgrade portions of existing systems that currently secure the Y-12 National Security Complex that have limited expansion capability, are supported by an aging infrastructure, and use antiquated technology. Immediate planning to support Y-12 modernization efforts and replacement of the existing security systems is essential to avoid adversely affecting plant operations.
