Nuclear Emergency Response Agreement Signed with Sweden

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States will partner with Sweden on nuclear emergency preparedness and response, according to a National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) official.  The two nations signed an agreement this week at the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference in Vienna.

“Both the United States and Sweden are strong supporters of effective nuclear emergency preparedness and response programs,” said NNSA Associate Administrator for Emergency Operations Joseph Krol.  “This agreement provides an opportunity for us to develop capabilities to counter nuclear and radiological terrorism as well as observe and learn from each other’s program.”

The agreement with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority provides for cooperation in all aspects of nuclear emergency preparedness and response with a focus on joint training, drills and exercises, and an exchange of past experiences.  The cooperation will allow NNSA to continue to refine and improve its own programs while assisting other countries in developing their own effective programs.

Established by Congress in 2000, NNSA is a separately organized agency within the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science. NNSA maintains and enhances the safety, security, reliability and performance of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing; works to reduce global danger from weapons of mass destruction; provides the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the United States and abroad.
