Final Notice of Violation Issued to the University of California for Deficiencies in Security Procedures

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) issued a final notice of violation today to the University of California for violations of the department’s classified information security requirements during the university’s tenure as the management and operating contractor of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.

NNSA issued a preliminary notice of violation to the university on July 13, 2007, for five violations of departmental requirements regarding the protection of classified information. After consideration of the university’s written response to the preliminary notice of violation, NNSA issued a final notice of violation today that assesses a civil penalty of $3,000,000. The university has 30 days to either pay the penalty or challenge the violation.

Both the preliminary and final notices can viewed at http://www.hss.energy.gov/enforce/
