Veterans Issues

Caring for those who have served in our Armed Forces is a sacred national trust. Too often, our nation has spent great sums of money preparing for and waging war but not nearly enough to care for veterans after the guns have fallen silent and the troops have returned home. I believe that America has a moral obligation to ensure that veterans receive the health care, educational opportunities, disability compensation, readjustment counseling, and job training and placement services they've earned through their service to our nation. Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom have created a new and rapidly growing group of veterans who are seeking all of these services in record numbers. The single most important change Congress can make to existing law to help current and future veterans is to make veterans health care funding a mandatory program, just like Medicare and TRICARE. If we can find the money to buy the ships, planes, and tanks that carry our soldiers, pilots, and sailors into battle, we can find the money to take care of these same veterans after their service is over. Below you’ll find more information on what I've said and done to honor and care for those "who have borne the battle."

Holt-sponsored legislation

The bill calls on the President to establish a national “Hire A Veteran” week to urge employers, labor organizations, veterans service organizations, and Federal, State, and local governmental agencies to hire more of America’s veterans.

The bill would create the American Veterans Congressional Internship Program, which would allow each Member of the House to hire for a year one veteran who meets specified eligibility criteria.
