Welcome to the virtual Energy Library. The virtual Library harnesses the power of the personal computer to offer more resources to DOE employees anywhere, anytime.

We are in the process of transitioning from a physical to a virtual library. This transition will last several months before major enhancements to the online virtual library are implemented. In the meantime the library services will continue as normal, except that there will be no physical library or books.

The Energy Library is planning to enhance its virtual services in the upcoming months with:

• A new online interface 
• Quicker access to our Research Librarians 
• Partnering with program offices on providing and accessing content 
• Consolidating electronic subscriptions throughout the Department 
• Discussion forums 
• Friends of the Library 
• Other enhancements

We held book fairs in the Forrestal building to offer DOE employees approximately 23,000 cataloged publications that were previously in the Library. The publications are now on loan to Federal employees and are to be used only for furthering the Department of Energy's official purposes, as they are Government property. Upon permanent departure from DOE, these books must be maintained by the employee's program office.

During the upcoming months the Energy Library Reference librarians will continue to provide library services that include:  

• Searches — searching for subject oriented references using commercial databases and Internet resources
• Proactive Current Awareness Alerts — notifying patrons of new web resources in their subject areas
• Interlibrary Loan — obtaining items for patrons
• Electronic Journals — providing Inside Energy and The Energy Daily to the DOE HQ community

Although the physical Library no longer exists, Library services continue to be provided to all customers through this website and by telephone at (202) 586-3112 or (202) 586-9535. This transition will not impact the Headquarters Law Library.
