Savannah River Operations Office

Today, the Savannah River Site is a key Department of Energy (DOE) industrial complex dedicated to environmental management and cleanup, nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship, and nuclear materials disposition in support of the U.S. nuclear non-proliferation efforts.  The site also develops and deploys technologies to support the environmental cleanup and energy independence.

The site’s center is approximately 23 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia, and 20 miles south of Aiken, South Carolina, the two closest population centers.  There are more than 1,000 facilities at the site concentrated in only 10 percent of the total land area.

DOE’s Savannah River Operations Office is responsible for oversight of the EM operations at SRS.  Two other DOE offices, the Savannah River Site Office and the Office of Site Engineering and Construction Management oversee the missions supporting the DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration at SRS

SRS’ vision it to lead the nation in Energy Independence, National Security, and Environmental Excellence.

Environmental Excellence:
Working with state and federal agencies, SRS continues its commitment to excel in environmental cleanup, waste disposition, and nuclear materials disposition in a safe and secure manner. It continues to build partnerships and prepare the Site for the future. SRS cleanup technologies and strategies continue to be sought after by other sites, agencies, and countries to resolve environmental cleanup challenges.

National Security:
SRS is focusing its efforts on development of a new defense arsenal and securing nuclear materials. It continues to excel in stockpile stewardship activities and in developing innovative capabilities, like detection technologies, to improve homeland security. SRS will continue to have a major role in defense and national security. SRS is also applying its nuclear technology and resources to the national security mission in the Defense Program’s Complex Transformation and Nuclear Nonproliferation work of mixed oxide fuel fabrication and down blending of highly enriched uranium.

Energy Independence:
The opening of the Aiken County’s Center for Hydrogen Research marked the beginning of the Site’s transformation to a center for energy research. SRS serves as a top research hub for scientists and engineers who are working to solve the world’s energy problems. SRS is developing and demonstrating alternative energy technologies, by replacing coal power with biomass and converting all site vehicles to operate on ethanol, electrical power, or other domestic fuel. SRS is working become the first DOE site in the country to be 100% free of foreign oil.
