The U.S. Office of Special Counsel’s running team, Protectors of Whistleblowers otherwise known as POW!, came in number one among government agency teams in Sunday’s annual “Lawyers Have Heart” 10-K race, benefiting the American Heart Association.

The win prompted Special Counsel Elaine Kaplan to boast, “when a whistle goes off, we’re always up and moving.” Kaplan observed that “this latest victory goes to show that we will go the extra mile -- or 10 kilometers -- to prove it.”

The POW! team consisted of OSC staffers Karen Dalheim, Ron Jaicks, Melissa Mehring, Audrey Shadd, Hans Haverstick, Tim Hannapel, and two “friends of OSC”, Dan Jonas and David Lippold. POW! finished strongly against all teams in the race, coming in 4th overall out of the total 31 teams entered in other categories from law firms, corporations and trade associations, Congress, and the courts.

The U.S. Office of Special Counsel is an independent federal investigative and prosecutorial agency. Under the Civil Service Reform Act and the Whistleblower Protection Act, OSC’s primary mission is to safeguard the merit system by protecting federal employees from prohibited personnel practices, especially reprisal from whistleblowing.
