By Congressman Brad Sherman, Senior Member House International Relations Committee
Pursuant to special legislation enacted by Congress, the State Department created the Office to Combat Anti-Semitism in 2006. Congressman Tom Lantos (of blessed memory) requested that the new Office produce a report on the state of Anti-Semitism around the world.
This report was released on March 13. It is a well written and comprehensive review of Anti-Semitism worldwide. However, as a State Department report, it does not look at Anti-Semitism in the United States.
As an official report of the United States government, it carries great weight in foreign capitals. I know this report sheds light on the continuing problem of Anti-Semitism. Some of the countries where violent Anti-Semitism is on the rise are among our closest allies. I hope this report will aid in our efforts to encourage all governments to fight this most persistent form of hate.
The report reflects months of research and analysis. The director of the State Department’s Office to Combat Anti-Semitism is Gregg Rickman, and the deputy director of that Office is Lisa Sherman.
