Mission and Functions

Mission
The Office of Technology manages the Technology Deployment and Technology Development Programs to improve the security posture of the Department of Energy and the protection of its assets and facilities through the deployment of new safeguards and security technologies and development of advanced technologies that reduce operating costs, save protective force lives, and improve security effectiveness.

Functions

  • Conducts security system testing and analyses of safeguards and security technology and related equipment and techniques associated with programmatic mission requirements for deployment at field and Headquarters sites.
  • Assembles, leads, and manages teams of subject matter experts to review, analyze, and resolve major site safeguards and security issues within the Department, including identification of technology deployment and development opportunities (e.g., the Chemical Defense Analysis Team) (Technical Support and Consultation).
  • Archives requests to transfer HSS-developed security technologies, and the final determinations, to establish a case history and precedence for future requests (Technology Transfer).
  • Negotiates and establishes project lifecycle plans and Memorandums of Agreement (MOA's) for deployment and development of security technologies throughout the DOE/NNSA complex.
  • Manages domestic and international technology development projects for the Department of Defense's Technical Support Working Group (Project Management).
  • Jointly sponsors technology development and demonstration activities (the TSWG Program, the Force Protection Equipment Demonstration, Nuclear Security Summit, etc.) and Inter and Intra-Agency Liaison.
  • Sponsors security technology demonstrations and exercises (e.g. Idaho Security technology Exposition), that summarize HSS ongoing deployment and development for DOE security personnel.
  • Prepares publications that can be distributed throughout DOE to communicate ongoing activities and accomplishments in technology deployment and development.
  • Coordinates with field elements, Headquarters, and Other Government Agencies to assess safeguards and security technology needs, and develops implementation plans, programs and strategies for deployment and technology.
  • Evaluates commercial and Other Government Agency technologies for immediate and future deployment to Headquarters and field sites.
  • Coordinates with the National Training Center and DOE policy organizations to ensure technology deployment is integrated into training curricula and policy.
  • Participates in site safeguards and security validation and verification reviews, Site Assistance Visits (SAV), and Technical Assistance Visits (TAV) for DOE facilities, as requested.
