CLINTON ADMINISTRATION OFFICIAL TO VISIT BOSTON AND CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS FOR DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CELEBRATIONS
Washington, D.C.-Marking Martin Luther King, Jr.s birthday as a day of service that reflects his life and teachings, Office of Personnel Management Director Janice R. Lachance will visit Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts to encourage people to pledge their time and talent to the community. To highlight the importance of community service, each year since 1994, President Clinton has called on all Americans to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr., Federal Holiday as a national day of service, said Director Lachance. We can all honor Dr. King's legacy by responding to the needs of communities across our country through activities like tutoring children, sheltering the homeless, making schoolyards safer, or making public spaces more inviting. I am encouraging my own agency employees to participate in community service projects on Monday, January 17, 2000, and I am honored to do so myself. Director Lachance will help distribute clothing and food in Cambridge at an event being sponsored by the Catholic Charities, Foster Grandparents and Cambridge Police Department. In Boston, Director Lachance will speak at City Year Boston; Millennium MLK Day Celebration Program. City Year is a service corps program for young people which works in coordination with AmeriCorps and taps the civic power of young people for an annual campaign of idealism.
