1.   How do I know that the information I provide online is secure?

OSC's E-Filing System provides online security by using powerful technologies designed to prevent unauthorized access to your personal information:
  • All of your account and complaint information is stored on servers with limited access, located in a controlled facility, and your sensitive information is always encrypted. The database containing your information is not connected directly to the Internet, and is further protected through the use of hardware devices that deny unauthorized requests for data.

  • Although you can access your account from any web browser, your password is stored only in the central database, which is located in a controlled facility. When you sign in, your password is used only to verify your identity.

  • When you sign in to the E-Filing System, your e-mail address and password are sent over the Internet using an encrypted connection.

  • When you submit your complaint, your signature password is never displayed on the screen.

2.   Why can't I file an online complaint or disclosure form anonymously?

The central feature of the OSC E-Filing System is that it enables you to save, retrieve and edit your forms online, from any location where you have internet service. To ensure that you (and only you) have ready and secure access to your forms over the internet, you must register a unique user identity. We also ask that you provide us with necessary contact information in case we have questions about your forms. If you wish to file your complaint or disclosure anonymously (i.e., without revealing your identity or being contacted), you may do so. Simply complete OSC Form 11, which is available on the forms page of OSC's website, print it out and mail or fax it to the address or telephone number given on the form.

3.   Is there any time limit for completing an online form once I start filling it out?

There is no time limit on active forms. This means that you may save, retrieve, and edit your forms as many times as you wish for as long as you wish. OSC reserves the right, however, to remove inactive forms from our database. We may conclude that your form is inactive if you have taken no action on it (e.g., if you have not retrieved it, modified it, saved it, or submitted it to us for processing) for at least one year. If we do conclude that your form is inactive, we will attempt to contact you before removing it. The same standards apply to inactive accounts. Although we may remove an account that has shown no activity after one year, we will attempt to contact the account holder before doing so.

4.   Can I use the online system to see the status of a complaint I filed through the mail?

At this time, to preserve your security, you can only use the E-Filing System to check the status of forms filed through the system itself. If you filed your complaint through the regular mail or by fax, you must contact us directly for status information.

5.   Are forms that I file online processed any differently from forms that I might file by mail?

No. Once a complaint or disclosure form has been submitted electronically and docketed for processing, it will be handled in the same manner as a form received by fax or mail.

6.   What should I do if I discover that information on an online form I submitted is incorrect?

You can't modify the form itself once it's been submitted, but as soon as you've received a case number you can contact us with any necessary corrections.
