TOP CLINTON ADMINISTRATION OFFICIAL JANICE R. LACHANCE ATTENDS KICK-OFF FOR BRONX JOB FAIR

Washington, D.C.-Office of Personnel Management ( OPM) Director Janice R. Lachance today participated in the kick-off events highlighting the upcoming first annual Bronx Job Fair being planned for October 19.

As the Director of the Federal governments human resource agency, I know the importance of hiring a highly qualified and diverse workforce, said Lachance. One very important way of doing this is to provide information that allows people all people to make career decisions that might include working for the Federal government.

The kick-off event included Bronx Borough President, Fernando Ferrer; President of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, Joe Ithier; and representatives from K-mart and other businesses that will participate in the job fair.

The October 19 event will provide an opportunity for neighborhood residents to become familiar with a variety of employment opportunities in the public and private sector. OPM plans to have an information booth on site with touch screen computers allowing instant access to Federal job information.

The Office of Personnel Management developed and oversees the job information highway which includes several components to help applicants find new careers. They may obtain free, up-to-date, comprehensive, self-service Federal employment information by using USAJOBs. By computer or phone they have access to world-wide job vacancy information, employment information fact sheets, job applications and forms and, in many instances, they can apply for positions on-line. USAJOBS is available in a variety of formats, ensuring access for customers with differing physical and technological capabilities.

President Clinton and Vice President Gore firmly committed to ensuring that no American is left behind in this new and prosperous global economy that no American is without the tools to succeed or access to the best careers, said Lachance. That is what job fairs like this one are all about, and that is why I am especially proud to join you today.
