Flat files are ASCII text files that contain no formatting; however, they are convenient to use with such statistical processing programs as SPSS or SAS. Text files can all be used with spreadsheet applications (Excel and Lotus) with some adjustments (the program will prompt you for those adjustments) and can be viewed in text viewers, e.g. Notepad.
