Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Lisle, Illinois, have assigned Duane Karjala as a resident inspector at the Prairie Island Nuclear Power Station near Red Wing, Minnesota.

Karjala, who began his duties at Prairie Island earlier this year, replaces Scott Thomas who recently accepted a position as senior resident inspector at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio.

Prior to his most recent assignment, Karjala worked as a reactor engineer in the agency's Region III office. He joined the NRC in July 2001 after having worked for Commonwealth Edison in its Downers Grove, Illinois, office where he was a corrective action specialist. Karjala also has worked for the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations and Consumers Energy Company, where he held a senior reactor operating license at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant near South Haven, Michigan.

Karjala served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967-1971 as a quality control inspector at the Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Karjala and his wife live in Red Wing, Minnesota.

Karjala joins NRC Senior Resident Inspector John Adams at the Prairie Island plant. They can be reached at (651) 388-8209.
