CHAIRMAN MESERVE TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE


Chairman Richard A. Meserve of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold his annual press conference on Thursday, April 26, at 10 a.m. at NRC headquarters, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Md.

Dr. Meserve will discuss changes that have been occurring in the nuclear power industry in recent years, mounting interest in commercial reactor license renewals, and possible future requests to license the construction of advanced types of reactors in the United States.

He will be prepared to answer questions on those and other matters of news interest.

The press conference will be held in the 18th floor Executive Conference Room. Those intending to cover the session are asked to call the Office of Public Affairs at 301-415-8200 to make arrangements for security badging and an escort to the room where the press conference will take place.

Dr. Meserve has served as NRC Chairman since October of 1999. Immediately prior to taking his post, he was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Covington & Burling, having joined the firm in 1981. From 1976 to 1977, he served as a law clerk to Justice Harry A. Blackmun of the United States Supreme Court. From 1977 to 1981, Dr. Meserve served as legal counsel to the President's Science and Technology Adviser.

Dr. Meserve received a B.A. degree from Tufts University in 1966, a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1975, and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University in 1976.
