NRC TO MEET WITH AMERICAN ELECTRIC POWER TO DISCUSS SAFETY PERFORMANCE AT THE D.C. COOK NUCLEAR POWER STATION

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with American Electric Power Company officials July 6 to discuss the NRC's annual assessment of safety performance at the D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Station near Bridgman, Michigan.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. EDT and will be held in the plant's Training Building. The plant is located at 7700 Red Arrow Highway between Bridgman and Stevensville, Michigan. NRC Region III Administrator Jim Dyer will participate in the meeting, and the public is invited to observe the session. NRC officials will be available afterwards to answer questions.

The annual assessment, referred to as the End-of-Cycle assessment, evaluates safety performance at D.C. Cook from April 2000 through March 2001, and informs plant officials of the NRC's plans for future inspections at the facility.

D.C. Cook's assessment will be unique because its two reactors were restarted from extended shutdowns during the assessment period. Unit 2 at D.C. Cook was restarted last June and Unit 1was restarted six months later. The reactors were returned to service after being shut down in 1997 when a design inspection raised questions about key plant emergency systems.
