NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON NUCLEAR RESEARCH IN WASHINGTON, D.C., ON FEBRUARY 21

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has scheduled a fourth and final public meeting to further discuss the role and direction of nuclear regulatory research on February 21 in Washington, D.C. Participants in the session will include government officials, members of the general public, industry representatives and experts from academia.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, located at 1800 K Street, NW, in Washington, D.C. The center is located one block west of the Farragut North Metro Station on the Red Line and one block north of the Farragut West Metro Station on the Orange and Blue lines. The session will start at 9:15 a.m. and is expected to end by 5 p.m.

As a result of the first two public meetings, the panel of nuclear experts issued a draft report containing individual views on the role and direction of regulatory research. The draft report also contained several recommendations. The third session focused on strategies for implementing the recommendations as well as briefings by NRC licensing and regional offices. The final meeting will review, discuss and propose individual recommendations for Commission consideration. Members of the expert panel also will discuss their perspectives and responses to inquiries from NRC Chairman Richard A. Meserve.

Those who seek additional information or agenda updates on the meeting should contact Jim Johnson, at 301-415-6293; fax 301-415-5153; e-mail, Jim.Johnson@nrc.gov. Seating for the meeting is limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
