PREHEARING CONFERENCE SCHEDULED ON TURKEY POINT NUCLEAR PLANT LICENSE RENEWAL

A Nuclear Regulatory Commission Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will hold a prehearing conference on Thursday, January 18 in Homestead, Florida, for parties in a proceeding involving an application to renew the licenses for both nuclear units at the Turkey Point plant.

Florida Power & Light is seeking the license renewal, which would permit the two units to operate an additional 20 years beyond their current licenses which expire in 2012 and 2013. Two people have petitioned the ASLB to intervene in the plant's license renewal process.

At the conference, the Licensing Board will hear arguments on the standing of the petitioners and the admissibility of their contentions. The ASLB will later issue an order containing a ruling on these questions.

Administrative judges conducting the conference are Thomas S. Moore, Presiding Officer; Dr. Richard F. Cole, and Dr. Charles N. Kelber.

The conference will begin at 9:30 a.m., in the Homestead City Council Chambers in the Homestead City Hall at 790 North Homestead Boulevard.
