CHAIRMAN DICUS ASSUMES DUTIES AS HEAD OF NRC

Commissioner Greta Joy Dicus assumed her duties today as Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

She was appointed by President Clinton to succeed outgoing Chairman Shirley Ann Jackson, whose term expired yesterday.

Chairman Dicus, a radiation biologist from Arkansas, has been an NRC Commissioner since 1996. Before joining the Commission, she was Director of the Division of Radiation Control and Emergency Management at the Arkansas Department of Health. She also is a former Chairman of the Central Interstate Low-level Radioactive Waste Commission and a former Member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Enrichment Corporation.

A native of Arkansas, Chairman Dicus is a graduate of Texas Woman's University and earned a master's degree in radiation biology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.

Before joining the Arkansas Division of Radiation Control, she conducted research in radiation health effects at Harvard Medical School, Rice University, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.

Chairman Dicus is a member of the Health Physics Society, The Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors and the Society of Sigma Xi.
