NRC ISSUES FINAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT

RESULTING FROM CALVERT CLIFFS LICENSE RENEWAL REVIEW

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued its final environmental impact statement on the proposed renewal of the operating licenses for the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Lusby, Md. In the report, the NRC staff concludes there are no impacts that would preclude renewal of the license for environmental reasons.

Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) Co. submitted an application to the NRC in April 1998 to renew the licenses for Calvert Cliffs Units 1 and 2 for another 20 years. The current license for Unit 1 expires on July 31, 2014, Unit 2's on August 31, 2016.

As part of its review of the application, the NRC held four meetings -- two on July 9, 1998, and two on April 6, 1999 -- regarding a draft version of the environmental impact statement to receive comments from members of the public, local officials and representatives of other agencies. The NRC will now submit the final environmental impact statement to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which will notify interested government agencies of its availability. Unless concerns are raised during a 30-day period, the environmental review will be considered completed.

A copy of the executive summary from the final environmental impact statement is available on the NRC's Web site, at: http://www.nrc.gov/OPA/reports/renewal.htm

A copy of the entire report should be available at the same location in the near future.

Following the completion of safety reviews, the NRC expects to render a decision on the application sometime next spring.
