TO DISCUSS PROPOSED URANIUM DOWNBLENDING PROJECT AT NFS
Printable Version PDF Icon

Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials will meet with officials of Nuclear Fuel Services, Incorporated, which is located in Erwin, Tennessee, on June 27 and 30 at the NRC’s headquarters in Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the meetings is to discuss plans for submittal and review of the amendment application for the Oxide Conversion Facility in the Blended Low-Enriched Uranium (BLEU) complex. In addition they will address pending requests for information on the amendment request for the BLEU Preparation Facility.

NFS has proposed to build the facility at its Erwin, Tennessee, site. It would be designed to take surplus high-enriched uranium from the Department of Energy and downblend it into low-enriched uranium which then would be fabricated into fuel for commercial nuclear power reactors. The NRC has made no decision as yet on the NFS request.

The June 27th meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. in Room T-8-F-1 at the NRC’s Two White Flint North building, 11545 Rockville Pike in Rockville. It is open for public observation, and NRC officials will be available prior to its conclusion to answer questions from interested observers. The June 30th meeting is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in Room T-10-A-1 at the NRC’s Two White Flint North building. That meeting will be open from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for public observation, and NRC officials will also be available prior to its conclusion to answer questions. The meeting will then be closed to the public at 2:30 p.m. due to the sensitive nature of the information to be discussed at that point.
