NRC ESTABLISHES DEPUTY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR
HOMELAND PROTECTION AND PREPAREDNESS
Printable Version PDF Icon

The Chairman, in consultation with the Commission, has established the Deputy Executive Director for Homeland Protection and Preparedness to increase the agency’s attention to cross-cutting issues that affect security, incident response, emergency preparedness, vulnerability assessments and their mitigation strategies, and external integration of comprehensive strategies for these areas.

The new Deputy will be William F. Kane who previously had oversight of the Offices of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Enforcement, Investigations, and the Regions. A successor to Mr. Kane will be announced shortly.

In making the announcement, Chairman Diaz stated that the new Deputy “...will have the authority to go across agency lines of authority and to seek and resolve protection and preparedness issues, no matter who is doing it or where they reside in the agency.” This will also ensure that NRC activities involving protection and preparedness of the public from nuclear events will reside under one senior manager, who will have the full support of every office in the NRC. The Chairman also stated that, “As a key component of our focus on implementation, the NRC is going to pay increasingly close attention to homeland protection and preparedness.”

NRC’s Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response, which has significantly increased our nuclear security and response capabilities over the last year, will continue to focus on those security issues requiring its attention.
