NRC FINDS NO
SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT FROM |
|||||||||
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
has issued its final environmental impact statement on the proposed renewal
of the operating licenses of Units 1 and 2 at the St. Lucie nuclear power plant.
In the environmental impact statement, the NRC staff found there are no environmental
impacts that would preclude license renewal for an additional 20 years of operation.
The St. Lucie nuclear facility is located 12 miles southeast of Ft. Pierce, Florida, in St. Lucie County. The operating licenses for Units 1 and 2 expire on March 1, 2016, and April 6, 2023, respectively. Florida Power & Light Co., the operator of the plant, submitted applications for the renewal of the license on November 29, 2001. As part of its environmental review of the application, the NRC held public meetings near the plant to discuss the scope of the review and a draft version of the environmental impact statement for each plant. Comments were received from members of the public, local officials and representatives of other state and federal agencies. Copies of the statement are available electronically through the NRC’s Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) on the NRC web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/web-based.html. The report ADAMS accession number is ML031410181. Help in using ADAMS is available by contacting the NRC Public Document Room staff at 301/415-4737 or 1/800/397-4209, or by sending a message to pdr.resource@nrc.gov via e-mail. The report also is available for public inspection at the NRC’s Public Document Room, located at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland. |
