The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Region II office in Atlanta has implemented its hurricane response procedure for monitoring of Hurricane Isabel as it nears the coast of North Carolina and Virginia.

The Atlanta office will activate its Incident Response Center at about 7:00 p.m. (EDT) today. NRC inspectors from the Region II office are currently at those sites that may be affected by the storm, and are reviewing preparations for the impending severe weather. Those sites include the Brunswick nuclear plant on the coast of southeastern North Carolina, the Surry plant in southeastern Virginia, the Harris plant in central North Carolina and the North Anna plant in central Virginia. The Brunswick plant declared an Unusual Event Tuesday evening by procedure based on the issuance of a hurricane warning. The NRC is also monitoring the Global Nuclear Fuel plant in southeastern North Carolina and the BWXT fuel facilities in Virginia. Based on current forecasts, Surry and North Anna are most likely to be affected.

NRC Regional Administrator Luis Reyes said the agency will continue to closely monitor preparations at those facilities until the storm no longer threatens operations. He said the NRC is also maintaining close contact and coordination with the States of North Carolina and Virginia.

Projected landfall for Hurricane Isabel is expected along the coast of North Carolina Thursday afternoon.
