NRC STAFF PROPOSES $7,500 CIVIL PENALTY AGAINST VIRGINIA COMPANY
FOR VIOLATIONS OF NRC RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL CONTROLS REQUIREMENTS
Printable Version PDF Icon

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has proposed a $7,500 civil penalty against IBS of America Corporation of Chesapeake, Virginia, for violations of NRC safety requirements related to transfer, receipt and control of licensed radioactive material.

In a letter to the company, Luis A. Reyes, Administrator of the NRC’s Region II office in Atlanta, said an NRC inspection found that IBS had sent gauges containing licensed material without verifying, prior to that transfer, that individuals being sent the material were authorized to receive such material. In addition, the NRC is citing IBS for its failure to control and maintain constant surveillance of licensed material as required by NRC regulations.

The Reyes letter said the civil penalty was being proposed to reflect the significance of the violations and to emphasize the importance of maintaining control of licensed material. The NRC staff has concluded that the company’s corrective actions are adequate.

The NRC’s letter, its enclosures and the company’s response will be made available through the agency’s Web site at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html. Help in accessing the document is available from the NRC Public Document Room at 301-415-4737 or 1-800-397-4209.

The company has 30 days from receipt of the letter to either pay the civil penalty or to protest its imposition.
