The National Academy of Engineering has elected Richard A. Meserve, Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, to Academy membership.

Dr. Meserve was elected specifically “for leadership in the development of national and international programs for strengthening nuclear safety and safeguards,” the National Academy declared in a statement today. Membership is considered among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.

Dr. Meserve was one of 77 newly elected members to the National Academy from the United States and abroad. He became Chairman of the NRC in October 1999 and has announced plans to leave the agency on March 31 to take over as president of the Carnegie Institution of Washington.

Dr. Meserve earned a B.A. from Tufts University in 1966, a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1975, and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University in 1976.
