NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS IN VIRGINIA
ON THE EARLY SITE PERMIT PROCESS FOR THE NORTH ANNA SITE
Printable Version PDF Icon

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold two public meetings on April 1 in Mineral, Virginia, to discuss the review process for an early site permit application from Dominion Energy at its North Anna site, where there are currently two operating nuclear reactors.

Dominion has notified the NRC that it expects to file an application for the North Anna site in September of this year. If an early site permit is granted, it would allow the site to be used for one or more new nuclear reactors. Although only very limited construction activities would be allowed by the NRC under an early site permit, the permit would allow the applicant to resolve many environmental, site safety and emergency planning issues before beginning actual construction of a new reactor facility. If the NRC approves the new reactor site, Dominion could hold or "bank" the North Anna site for up to 20 years before filing an application with the NRC for approval to begin construction of a new facility.

The meetings scheduled for April 1 are designed to provide information on the NRC early site permit review process, as well as to outline future opportunities for public involvement in that process. Additional information on the early site permit process is on the NRC’s web site at www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-licensing/esp.html.

The two meetings will be similar, with one at 2:00 in the afternoon and one at 7:00 in the evening. In addition, the NRC staff will host an "open house" beginning one hour before each meeting. During the open house period, individual NRC staff members will be available for informal discussions about the early site permit process.

The meetings will be held in the Louisa County Library, one mile west of Mineral on state routes 22 and 208. Parking will be available in the library parking lots both in front of and directly behind the library. Additional parking is available in the school parking lot behind the library. Parking is allowed in any parking space numbered 317 or higher, but no parking will be allowed in unnumbered parking spaces near the school stadium. Parking is also available in a gravel parking lot across the entrance road that goes by the library. Any open parking space behind the library may be used for the evening meeting.
