NHLBI Research and Policy Update
Number 21s2   Special Sept/Oct 2005 Supplement II

bulletReducing Regulatory Burdens Associated with Health Care and Research

 NOTICE

Please be advised that the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is inviting comments from health care providers and the biomedical research community on reducing regulatory burdens associated with health care and research. For details, please refer to the attached PDF.

 BACKGROUND

In response to House Appropriations Committee Report 108-636, HHS and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) established an interagency committee to consider how major federal regulations governing the health care industry could be reformed to reduce costs and other burdens and to improve translation of biomedical research into medical practice. These activities build upon the 2002 report from the HHS Advisory Committee on Regulatory Reform that can be found at the following URL:
http://regreform.hhs.gov/Finalreport.pdf

In a PDF filenotice published in the Federal Register the DHHS invited written suggestions for specific reforms to regulations, guidance documents, or paperwork requirements that would improve the delivery of health care by increasing efficiency, reducing unnecessary costs, removing uncertainty, and increasing flexibility, while maintaining or improving patient safety and quality of care and other patient protections.

All comments are due on November 3, 2005 (instructions for delivery are included in the pdf announcement).

In the upcoming months the DHHS and the OMB will also conduct a series of public meetings across the country to obtain additional input.
