The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting next week to review the results of the final radiation survey, one of the last steps in decommissioning Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Generating Station.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, in the Platteville Community Center, 508 Reynolds Ave., Platteville, Colorado. Copies of NRC reports of its inspection of final survey techniques and the NRC's independent measurement of residual radiation levels will be available at the meeting.
A final radiation survey is a careful, systematic check of the former nuclear power plant site with sensitive radiation measuring instruments to verify that cleanup has been properly completed. The next step in the decommissioning of Fort St. Vrain will be a request by Public Service Company of Colorado, the plant's owner, to terminate the license. This step, expected to be taken in early 1997, will conclude the decommissioning process begun in 1990.
