SDDPT Voyager Project Data (PDS)

NSSDC ID: PSNO-00007

Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)

Ancillary data are required for the proper use of these data

Description

This data set consists of data recovered from a variety of Voyager Project data on magnetic tape. The tape prefixes included under this data set includes those with numeric prefixes as well as those beginning with B, JST, ODR, PWS, QEDR, UR, and JM. The PWS, QEDR and UR Tapes are suspected to be IPL generated Uranus encounter PWS EDR's, QEDR's and radiometrictly corrected EDR's, respectively. The JM tapes contained original Jupiter global mosaics from Voyager 2.

The majority of the data in this dataset were read from 9-track tapes. Where there were 7-track tapes the 6-bit characters to 8-bits by placing zeroes into the two high order bits.

The file B_INFO.TXT (coresident on the CDs) correlates the tape ID with available descriptions of the tapes' contents. These descriptions were obtained from the exterior tape labels and available information contained in the MIPS on-line tape database.

The images were copied onto CD-WO as part of the Science Digital Data Preservation Task. Each volume in the set includes ancillary information in addition to instrument data. The data were copied from a collection of tapes that, in most cases, were at least 15-20 years old. Each CD has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs).

This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. In general, these data are stored at NSSDC for archive, not distribution, purposes. The data are not always in a readily accessible form. In order to request this data, please talk to the NSSDC contact person listed for this data set.

This is SDDPT data set code 77-084A-0071, volume IDs VGR_8201 through VGR_8245.
