Public invited to free live telecast of Obama inauguration

Historic swearing-in is featured event of UAA Alaska Civil Rights Month

ANCHORAGE, AK – The public is invited to a free live telecast of the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20, in UAA’s Wendy Williamson Auditorium. Doors open 7 a.m.

The historic swearing-in of the nation’s first African-American president is the featured event of UAA Alaska Civil Rights Month. Following the new president’s inaugural speech, UAA Chancellor Fran Ulmer and Rev. Alonzo Patterson Jr., president of the MLK Foundation of Alaska, will take the stage. Interpreter provided. Light refreshments.

Other highlights of UAA Alaska Civil Rights Month include:

** 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, East High School, Anchorage
Activist Arun Gandhi shares his unique reflections on the person and historical legacy of his grandfather, Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi. He will also discuss parallels between the non-violence movements of both his grandfather and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Interpreter provided.

Showing of the movie The Land is Ours in honor of Elizabeth Peratrovich Day (Feb. 16). Light refreshments.

** 7-9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 19, Rasmuson Hall, Room 101
UAA’s award-winning Seawolf Debate Team tackles the question “Should the State of Alaska devote resources to sustain rural villages?”

** Noon, Friday, Feb. 20, UAA Campus Bookstore
Ollen Hunt, author of Buffalo Soldier, a memoir of his days as a black solider in WWII, will give a talk about his experiences and sign copies of his book.
