Veterans Day is the day on which this nation honors the men and women living among us who took great risks and made great sacrifices to keep our country free and strong.
Though many of them suffered injuries during their service, every veteran will tell you that freedom is worth fighting for. So will the men and women who serve today in the American military. The prayers of the entire nation are with them as they fight in distant places like Iraq and Afghanistan to defeat terrorism and protect our freedoms.
America is home to just over two and a half million veterans. You may have a veteran in your family, or perhaps a veteran lives next door. Many veterans work among us at HUD. I know how much they would appreciate it if you took time on Veterans Day to say "thank you." Because of their bravery and sacrifices, you, your families, and the generations to come will have the chance to live the American Dream.
May God bless the veterans who have so courageously served our nation.
