Since
1994, the South St. Paul Housing & Redevelopment Authority (SSP
HRA) in Minnesota has received Congregate Housing Services Program
(CHSP) funding to have supportive services available for eligible
residents in their John Carroll and Nan McKay buildings. Residents
needing help with meal-time activities and two other activities
of daily living, such as help with laundry, housekeeping or grocery
shopping, are eligible for the program.
This
"Independent Living Program" uses volunteers to help keep
the program affordable. The HRA's partner, DARTS, has helped develop
innovative ways to meet participants' needs. Since 1974, DARTS has
been a community leader in fostering successful aging and life transitions
by offering affordable and flexible services and resources that
create meaningful possibilities for individuals, families, and communities.
Approximately
17 DARTS volunteers are trained to help participants. In addition,
professionals of various disciplines meet as the Professional Assessment
Committee to create a comprehensive weave of services to best meet
individuals' needs. Scout troops, local church members or students
from junior high through advanced degree programs all seek opportunities
with residents to gain life experience or to fulfill internships.
Their work with participants often brightens each other's day.
Currently
our CHSP serves 29 participants. Services include a hot noon meal
served daily in the community room of each building and a second
meal participants take with them to eat for supper, 5 days a week.
Housekeeping, laundry and other help are also available. The on-site
service coordinator can make arrangements for just about anything
else that's needed, such as finding a licensed aide to help with
bathing, a nurse to set-up medications, help with paperwork, etc.
Support
services have made a positive difference in the quality of life
of many residents over the years, helping them remain engaged and
independent.
