Lincoln Area Agency on Aging

 Information by State
 Print version

In Lincoln, Nebraska, two CHSP grants were awarded in 1994 to the Lincoln Area Agency on Aging for Burke Plaza and Mahoney Manor, both owned by the Lincoln Housing Authority, which provides the cash match for the program. Burke Plaza has 91 apartments, and Mahoney Manor has 120.

Over the years, several hundred residents have benefited from the case management and supportive services made available through CHSP. Currently, over 100 residents of the two buildings receive services.

CHSP has had a high degree of acceptance by the residents since its first days. The
availability of supportive services - housekeeping, personal care, meals, and transportation - along with dedicated case managers, gives residents a sense of security not seen in other senior housing projects. These two buildings are well known by case managers throughout the community as service enriched housing options for low income elders who may otherwise need to move to assisted living or nursing homes.
CHSP case managers are readily available to address health changes, crisis situations, find resources, and respond to changes, such as when the Medicare Drug Plans came into effect.

Resident comments:

"I have been fine until last year when I went to the hospital. I could come back home because of CHSP. I don't have money to pay for all the services myself. People like me need this program. We want to stay in our homes and not be forced to move."

"I take some noon meals offered by CHSP. It means a lot to me to get downstairs to the meals. I enjoy the fellowship of getting to eat with other people. "

"I used the program after a major surgery. I am fortunate that I don't have to use it on an ongoing basis, however it is comforting to know it's there if needed.
