Kinneret Apartments

We are very pleased with the success of the CHSP program at Kinneret Apartments, a 280 unit apartment community located in Orlando, Florida. CHSP entered into the life of Kinneret residents in 1997. Since then an average of 29 residents per year have been served by the program, although officially we may have only 20 residents on the program at any one time. At Kinneret each participant receives seven hot meals per week, two to three hours of housekeeping, and a personal grocery shopper once a week. Monday through Friday participants have the option of eating in the dining room or having their meals sent up to their apartments. Each Friday two meals from appetizer to dessert are sent up to be reheated over the weekend. The CHSP Coordinator makes certain that each resident has a microwave oven to reheat the meal. (Microwaves are often donated to residents in need through the efforts of the project's Service Coordinator.)

The benefit of this program to our residents is evident in the extended time they can remain in their home with dignity and freedom of choice because they are assisted with the daily tasks which they can no longer complete by themselves as they age and their needs change. The best smiles we see occur when residents are able to come home from a nursing home or rehabilitation center because they have CHSP services waiting for them. No longer do they have to carry laundry, struggle to make a bed, or vacuum.

The one nutritious meal a day eliminates the worry of having to prepare a meal and promotes their overall health and well-being. While the housekeeper's chief duty is to insure a clean and healthy home, the housekeeper often provides the resident an opportunity to socialize, a friend with whom they can talk. Housekeepers also immediately report if there is some concern about a resident, or if they feel the participant could benefit from other services. Several times housekeepers have alerted us to the failing health of a participant, and we were able to engage a local Hospice to make their final days comfortable and peaceful.

We have seen residents, relieved of the burdens of cooking and housekeeping, who are now able to resume hobbies and volunteering to help others. Truly the supportive services provided by CHSP have been a blessing to our residents.
