CHSP has been a vital part of the operation of Bell House since
1982, enabling us to provide enhanced services for the twenty-two
physically disabled adults who live here. Most of our residents
have Cerebral Palsy or Spina Bifida; all are in wheelchairs, and
many need high levels of personal care.
As
a part of our Advancing Independence Program, the Service Coordinator
assesses each resident to determine what level of independence is
realistic for each program participant. Residents then set goals
for learning higher levels of independence and receive the tools
that they need to be successful in reaching their goals. Almost
every participant in the program has increased their level of independence.
Lonnie
has learned to access the Internet to research his areas of interest
(sports cars, the Civil War, etc.), another resident that is hard
of hearing has received assistive technology that allows her to
make and receive telephone calls, and other residents have learned
to do their own laundry, to use the local transit service, etc.
The residents are excited about this initiative and look forward
to the higher levels of empowerment that occur as residents "stretch"
and learn higher levels of functioning.
Thanks
to CHSP funding, our residents are able to go to jobs, classes at
local community colleges, to the YWCA, to church, shopping, sporting
events, movies, bowling, art exhibits, etc. Many of these events
require special transportation and personal assistance, which is
only possible with the financial support of CHSP. It would be impossible
for Bell House to provide the lifestyle that the residents now enjoy
without this funding. They would become isolated, giving up all
opportunities to attend work, school and activities. CHSP funding
provides our residents with an opportunity to live full, productive
and successful lives in our community.
