Workers HAMPTON ROADS, Va. -- Providing a safe work environment for shipyard workers in Virginia's Hampton Roads area is at the heart of a partnership announced today by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the South Tidewater Association of Ship Repairers, Inc. Officially signed at the Seventh Annual STASR/OSHA Safety and Health Seminar, the partnership agreement aims to prevent serious accidents through increased training and enhanced safety and health programs. The ship repair industry has one of the highest injury and illness rates in the country. STASR is a trade association with more than 140 members who employ some 30,000 workers in all industry trades. "This program is part of OSHA's long-range effort to develop partnerships among business, labor and government to improve safety and health management," says Tom Pope, area director of the Norfolk OSHA office. "The agreement is a natural progression for the long-standing, excellent relationship we've developed with STASR, and the extensive work we have done to protect industry workers."
